RIP Harold Clyde Scott

We were very sad when the keeper of the Scott flame in Little Bay East passed Dec 5, 2025. I wish I had had the honor of meeting him.

It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Harold Clyde Scott, of Little Bay East, NL, announces his passing. Clyde passed away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Friday, December 5th, 2025 at the age of 79.

Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of cherished memories are his devoted wife of 54 years, Cora; his three daughters, Karen Ross (William) of Catonsville, MD, Kristine Day (Dion Chard) of Conception Bay South, and Katherine Scott (Dan Oldford) of Paradise; and his beloved grandchildren, Alexandra, Ryan, and Ethan Ross, and Andrew and Jonathan Day (and their father, Michael). Clyde is also survived by his sister, Shirley Newhook of St. John’s; his brother, Carl Scott (Colleen) of Marystown; his sisters-in-law, Vera Scott of Paradise, Joan Scott of Grand Falls–Windsor, and Marie Scott of Calgary, AB; as well as many nieces, nephews, and a large circle of extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Allister and Grace Scott; his brothers, Fred, Walter, and Herb Scott; and his sisters, Manetta “Nettie” Marshall (Ewart), Joyce Meade (Harold), Doreen Grandy (Clyde), and Marina Denty (Herman).

Clyde was a dedicated teacher for 30 years. He began his career in Shoal Harbour, moved on to Pearce Amalgamated High in Salt Pond and Salem Elementary in Little Bay East, and retired as Vice-Principal of Jacques Fontaine All Grade School in 1997. He touched countless lives throughout his career, so much so that many former students still refer to him as Mr. Scott to this day. A lifelong learner and avid reader, he had an unwavering appreciation for books and knowledge. He also enjoyed a number of personal interests and hobbies, including listening to music and playing his guitar, and doing countless crossword puzzles. Always full of wit and wisdom, Clyde’s legacy will live on through the endless jokes, sayings, stories, and memories he shared. He is deeply loved and will be forever missed.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tom Dunne at the Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Le and Dr. McCarthy and the incredible nurses at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre (especially Juana and Bill), the staff at the BPHC chemo unit, and community health nurse Shirley Ryan, for their care and compassion over the last 18 months.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place and a celebration of life will be held at a future date. In Clyde’s memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Surrounded by the love of his family. Walter peacefully passed in his 87th year at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center

Walter is predeceased by his Son Keith Scott and daughter in law Tracy. Parents Grace and Allister Scott, brothers Fred and Herb Scott; Sisters Manetta “Nettie” Marshall, Joyce Meade, Doreen Grandy, and Marina Denty.

Walter will be forever remembered by his loving wife Joan of 62 years, Daughter Sharon Scott (Katherine Williams), Son Wayne Scott (Heidi), Sister Shirley Newhook, Brothers Clyde Scott (Cora), Carl Scott (Colleen), Grandson Joshua Scott (Emily) and their children Wynnifred and Olson, and Grandson Matthew Scott. Walter also leaves a large circle of extended family and lifelong friends.

After graduating High School in 1953 Walter embarked on a short teaching career in Grand Bruit before enrolling at Memorial University where he graduated with his Bachelor of Commerce Degree in 1959.

Walter and Joan settled in Grand Falls-Windsor where they raised their three children Wayne, Sharon and Keith. Walter was employed as a Business Agent and Accountant for United Brotherhood of Carpenters until his retirement in 1992. Walter was an active and dedicated member and lay reader of Memorial United Church. He was the Sunday School Superintendent, Clerk of Session, and an original and very proud member of the Men’s choir. Singing was one of Scottie’s great joys.

Scottie had many interests including badminton which he played and coached, camping, fishing, hunting, reading and research. Scottie maintained a strong connection to his roots and frequently visited his birthplace and hometown, Little Bay East. Following his retirement he and Joan maintained a seasonal cottage in Little Bay East where Scottie exercised his love for gardening. He spent much time researching and documenting the genealogy of his own and other families of the area. He was particularly fond of engaging in conversations with locals and family who provided wonderful stories for his research all of which he penned into a journal of the Scott family history.

I believe these photos to be of Capt. George "Thomas" Scott (1868-1944). They belonged to my great grandfather William Scott, brother of Captain Scott. I have previous correspondence between the two brothers including an envelope containing photos of ships.

It's been a long time since I posted about the Buttery family of Port Aux Basques (specifically Grand Bay!) I didn't know a lot about my 2nd great grandmother Lizzie, as she was called, but cousin Nancy recently reached out to me with a new photo and info. She said Elizabeth Buttery was a midwife and that "Elizabeth probably knew more about delivering babies than some doctors know now."

HISTORY

Albert Edward Buttery (from Channel Islands) married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lomond in 1881 and had eight children in Grand Bay, Newfoundland. Twin sons died within a few weeks of birth and are not included in the Family Chart. Albert Edward died at the young age of 39. His oldest daughter Elizabeth "Eliza" (my great grandmother) married William John Scott (in 1911) from Little Bay East, and they moved to Rochester, New York, shortly thereafter. Eliza’s mother eventually remarried Charles Pike and would later adopt her granddaughter by son Walter.

Candis Scott Elliott (1942-2020)

Candis Elliott (mom), granddaughter of Eliza Buttery Scott (1890-1975) and William Scott (1882-1938), died at 7:20 in the morning of January 24, 2020, most likely from COVID-19, in Asheville, N.C. She had been a quadriplegic since July 2006. 

OBITUARY

Candis “Candy” Diane (Scott) Elliott passed away January 24, 2020, after a long battle with serious health conditions resulting from a tragic fall in 2006. 

Candis (Candy) Diane Scott Elliott was born in Jamestown, New York, on May 24, 1942, to Pastor Lawrence and Vera Scott. She grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois, where her father served as Pastor of the Hinsdale Church. She doted on her brother David who was 6 years her junior. Candis loved playing the piano and accompanying her father when he sang.

When Candis was a teenager, her father accepted a call to Florida Sanitarium Church and she attended Forest Lake Academy where she met Marvin Elliott who was a grade above her. When he graduated and entered Loma Linda School of Dentistry, Candis soon followed to attend La Sierra University where she majored in Elementary School Education. After graduating, she and Marvin were married August 2, 1964, in San Bernardino, CA, and at the same time, she took a position as 1st grade teacher at Loma Linda Elementary School.

In 1966, Marvin and Candis were called to Asheville where Marvin took over a friend's dental practice. Their daughter Michelle Elliott Fontaine (Nelson) of Alpharetta, GA was born in 1968, and son Lee Elliott (Kirsten) of Candler was born in 1971. The family enjoyed snow skiing, camping, and visiting Hilton Head in the summers. Along with Marvin and her children, Candis was also survived by her brother, David Scott (Kathy) of Tillamook, OR.

Candis played the organ and piano for the Mount Pisgah Academy Church for over 20 years. She taught music and 5th and 6th grade at Asheville Pisgah Church School. One of her spiritual gifts was hospitality. She enjoyed cooking and hosting gatherings, including church bridal and baby showers. Her greatest joy in her later years was her grandchildren, Lauren and Kaeleigh Elliott. Kaeleigh followed in her grandmother's footsteps--accompanying others on the piano--including sister Lauren. Lauren, who most resembled her grandmother, took on her love of animals, and is also musically inclined.

Candis took great pride in the accomplishments of daughter Michelle, and son-in-law Nelson as they planted their own church in Alpharetta, Georgia, just as her great grandfather did in Massachusetts in the early 1900s. And like her parents and ancestors, she remained strong in her faith and never wavered throughout her ordeal since her accident left her paralyzed in July 2006.

When the family discussed arrangements after her death, it was suggested they have a quiet family service, but she requested a memorial service for everyone to attend so that the Lord could be publicly praised. Her service will be at 3pm, Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Mount Pisgah Academy Seventh-day Adventist Church in Candler.

Scott Connection to Famous Christmas Song

This story is about Lawrence Scott, the son of Eliza Buttery of Grand Bay and William Scott of Fortune Bay.

This story will probably be lost on the younger generations, but the ol' timers will find it interesting. Thomas Scott's (Fortune Bay's) grandson Lawrence Scott (my grandfather) was somewhat of a "singing preacher." He loved to sing, and my Mom often accompanied him on the piano.

Today Mom showed me a box of old sheet music, along with a folder containing correspondence between Lawrence Scott and Hugh Martin, Jr, the man who wrote Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Hugh thought the world of my grandfather, and they were very close.

Hugh Martin, Jr. was a composer who worked with Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Gene Kelly, Lena Horne, Debbie Reynolds, Michael Feinstein, Jerome Robbins, and many others! The last song Bing Crosby ever sang in public was written by Hugh.

Here is some of the correspondence my Mom kept.

New NS Buttery Branch Discovered

It usually takes someone dying to find entire branches of people, and such is the case with a branch descending from Walter Frederick Buttery, 1888-1916.

Walter died tragically at the age of 27 from TB. He had 3 daughters who mostly lived in North Sydney, NS. His second daughter Rebecca M. Buttery (1912-1970) married Philip G. Francis (1907-1991) and until yesterday, I found no evidence they had children. WRONG! They had 7 children!

Rebecca's children are:

1. Margaret Jane Francis Ongo
2. Regis Cordella Rose
3. Walter Frederick “Buck” Francis
4. Clarence Francis
5. Arthur Francis
6. Dorothy Cross
7. Oswald “ozzy” Francis

They are not in order of age--don't know all of the birthdates yet. 

Arthur Francis died in 2011 and worked as a purser aboard Marine Atlantic vessels for most of his life, retiring from the Atlantic Freighter in 1992. He was a former member of the Canadian Navy, and a veteran of Iraqi war, "Desert Storm" serving with the Merchant Marines. He was a member of Branch #19 Royal Canadian Legion, the Cape Breton Naval Veterans and St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.

Cousins

Happy 2015, everyone! Hope you are well. I haven't posted in awhile because I've pretty much learned all I can learn--or at least have found everything to be found online. The other day I saw this clip on a British sketch comedy show. SO funny! This is dedicated to all of my newfound cousins! Cheers!

Irish Buttery Family Branch

I try to keep up with my documentation and record my research on this blog so the info doesn't get lost down the road and others can benefit from it. This may sound morbid, but during my research, I have greatly benefited from online documentation by other relatives. After attempting to contact two individuals regarding their research, I found that they had passed. If it weren't for their research before they died, I wouldn't know nearly as much as I do now and I'm so grateful, but disappointed I can't thank them. So...in case I pass...here it all is! :-) RIP Jerry Lomond.

To recap, my line of Butteries--the focus of this blog--descend from Dr. Benjamin Buttery and Jane Griffiths of Monmouth, Wales. Benjamin begat William and William begat the branches I study. William's son Albert Edward ended up in Newfoundland (my branch.) His daughter Eliza ended up in Ireland. She is the first of at least 3 Eliza Butteries--one being my great grandmother.

Eliza Buttery was born about 1847. She married a Samuel Adams Dec 31, 1878 in Channel Islands, and they lived in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Eliza and Samuel begat another Samuel (1881-1916). Samuel married Margaret Eccles (first wife) and was killed in WW1 on Oct 8. Jerry Lomond said this about him: “Samuel Adams ran away to Canada and signed up on November 19, 1914 to serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force during World War 1. His name is on the Vimy Memorial, France. While in Canada, Samuel married Theodosia Johns and had a daughter.”

Samuel and Margaret begat Eliza Adams (1900-1974). She married Joseph McKnight and they lived in Northern Ireland. She died roughly a year before my g-grandmother Eliza Buttery Scott. Jerry Lomond has recorded Eliza and Joseph as having a son named Joseph McKnight (1926-1964.) I do not know anything past this.

Gotta love this, Newfies! It's been the Year of the Iceberg in Newfoundland. This Newfie descendant can't see them in person, but enjoyed miniaturizing them for a whimsical accessory. The adjustable silver plated circle bezel ring holds handcrafted clay icebergs, whale and water. The glaze covering gives the surface a kind of gel-like feel. The icebergs have more of a rubbery feel than hard or rough. The ring is approx. 1 inch across (25 mm).

R.I.P. Walter William Scott (1928-2014)

I am sad to announce the passing of Walter (AKA Walt or Sonny) Scott this morning in Rochester, NY. He was the son of Walter Archibald Scott from Little Bay East, Newfoundland. Obituary

Walter worked at Kee Lox, a paper company, many years before getting hired by Eastman Kodak and working on the instant camera until his retirement in 1990.

FYI: Many Scotts were associated with Eastman, including my great grandfather William Scott of Little Bay East.

3/13/14: I have found a record for Annie Blackmore who died in Sydney River, NS in 1940. Very possibly our Annie. We know she worked in North Sydney in 1937.

As some of you may know, it took me a couple of years to find out what happened to the youngest child (Rosanna/Rosie) of Albert Edward Buttery and "Lizzie" Lomond and I posted my findings here:

AND on my Mysteries Page, I have had this photo posted of the Scott family with a bunch of kids--the 3 youngest unknown.

I'm happy to say the youngest child has been identified as Hilda Amey! A few days ago, I finally made contact with her descendants in the Niagara Falls area. Hilda was the youngest child of Maud Buttery--sister to my great grandmother Eliza Buttery Scott. I have many more posts on the blog relating to my research on Maud and her family.

We think this photo was taken around 1925 when Maud and Hilda* lived with the Scotts. Maybe 1924. Rosanna died in 1923 and the thought crossed my mind that maybe the 2 children on the left are hers. As I have not yet tracked down Rosanna's descendants, I don't have a lot of info on the family, but it seems she had two children--John and Annie. I'm a little doubtful that these are the kids in the photo, however. I think Annie was born around 1920--same year as Hilda. John was born in 1916, so this boy seems a little young and the girl too old.

I would still like to find out what happened to Rosanna's family. Rosanna married Fredrick Blackmore 20 May 1914 in Channel. I believe the Blackmores had family in Nova Scotia and most likely settled there. I have record of John Blackmore, a seaman, visiting a George Blackmore in Halifax, 1937.

Facts

• Annie Blackmore worked as a domestic on King Street in North Sydney, NS in 1937.
• Fred Blackmore remarried Elosure Patience Crocker.
• In the 1934 census, the family is still living in Channel-PAB.

*It appears Maud's son John lived with husband Philip in the 1925 census. Maud and Philip were estranged. Maud died in 1929.

Tour Canada!

A couple of weeks ago I was helping some friends move in Atlanta, GA. When I first arrived at their apartment, I was greeted with a u-Haul and THIS graphic plastered on the side.

Needless to say, I got a HUGE grin on my face! I couldn't believe it! You never hear mention of Newfoundland--or even Canada--here in America, and I think it is such a tragedy. Sadly, I have never been to Canada, but I have studied it on a grand scale. I really don't see a need to travel to Europe when everything is in this country--mountains, sea, small villages, and people with British and French accents!

I don't know what is the bigger draw to Canada--the physical beauty or the inner beauty of its people. Of all of my friends on Facebook, Canadians seem the most jolly, the most happy-go-lucky, the most content. They never complain. I love these people!

Thank you cousin Martin for sending photos of the Welsh Butteries! They are a handsome bunch! First, here's a recap of the lineage.

William Buttery of Jersey, Channel Islands, had 10 children with Alega "Ety" Haywood. The 8th child, Albert Edward Buttery settled in Newfoundland (my branch.) The 4th child, Joseph Henry Buttery, Sr. settled in Wales and fathered Joseph Henry Buttery, Jr. and Jenny Buttery. Joseph Jr.'s family is the subject of these photos. His children were as follows:

James Richard Scott

I've discovered another Scott branch in America which is always exciting. In looking over my great grandfather William's obituary, I noticed he had a brother James in Medford, MA (1938.) James Richard Scott was the 7th child of Thomas and Sarah Scott. He was born 27 Oct 1875 in Little Bay East, Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, and married Phoebe Hannah Pittman on 30 Nov 1900 at Pool's Cove. Phoebe was born in 1880 at LBE. They had three children all born in LBE. 

James Scott and his family arrived in the U.S. around 1914/1915 and there is record of them living in Medford (Ellsworth St.) from 1920-1940. His brother Andrew also lived in Medford (1938.) I have not located any further info past the 1940 census. The info. I have obtained on their children is as follows:

1. Clarence Scott born 31 August 1901
2. Ada Scott born 15 November 1904 
3. James Scott born 1913

1. Clarence was an Engineer and married Lucy Isabel Wishman in 1926. At the time of their marriage, they lived at 33 Leighton St., Medford, MA. The following article contains info about the wedding with a photo of his bride. They had a son Richard.

2. Ada married Stanley Buffett (born in Fortune Bay) and had 2 boys. I have info on them living in the Boston area in 1940, Salem in the 1950s and both died in New Hampshire. This is the info on their sons:

Neal T. Buffett, born about 1930 and married Janet M Gerrish. They lived in Sunapee, N.H and Winter Harbor, ME.

 Gerald James Buffett (1931-1989) was a sheet metal mechanic and former co-owner of B&J Auto Body Shop. He lived in Salem, MA, in the 1950s, then in Tampa, FL from the 1960s to his death in 1989. I believe his first wife and mother of his 3 children was named Margaret, but not totally sure. His second wife was Barbara. Gerald's children are recorded in his obituary as follows: a son, John, Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Patty Smith, Virginia Beach, Va., and Rowena Buffett, California.

3. James Scott

James Scott was a fireman and didn't marry as far as I can tell. He lived in Medford, Mass
